Imaginary Animals

Image
Over many thousands of years people have created animals that do not actually exist. Here are some, starting with the most recent: Aloysius Snuffleupagus (/ˌsnʌfəlˈʌpəɡəs/), more commonly known as Mr. Snuffleupagus or Snuffy for short, is one of the characters on Sesame Street. His head bears resemblances to elephants and mammoths, but he has no tusks or (visible) ears. He also has a tail similar in shape to that of a dinosaur (like a sauropod; in particular, a Brontosaurus). He has thick, brown hair and a trunk, or "snuffle", that drags along the ground. Snuffy is also Big Bird's best friend, and has a younger sister named Alice. For many years, only Big Bird would see Snuffy, because he would always leave while Big Bird went to get the others, leading everyone else to believe Snuffy was simply an imaginary friend. After Sesame Street Presents: Follow That Bird, Big Bird finally succeeded in revealing Snuffy to his friends on Sesame Street. Before that, the main adu...

What the Hell is Poetry?

Image
We are working with poetry in modersmål English at the moment. You will be expected to read, talk about and even write poetry. It is not about if you think it is good poetry, or if you think it is fun or not. It is about learning something new about how English works. But first, what is poetry? Poetry is about feelings, emotions and imagination and does not just focus on meaning and understanding. There are always more than a few ways to understand a poem. It usually uses language and is written, but not all the time. It does not follow the same rules as other types of language, and this is why it is important to learn about it. A poem can be short or very long. For example: From time to time The clouds give rest To the moon beholders. . This was written 400 years ago by a Japanese man named Matsuo Bashō. It is a very famous poem. What do you think it means? To start making your own poem, begin with these websites that will help you: https://www.poetrygames.org/poetry-machine/ https://...

Not very long really in the scale of human history.   What will powered flight look like in the future? Maybe using jetpacks?   How will our houses look in the fut...

Autobiography - Who Are You?

Image
Autobiography is the writing about the self, or yourself. It is a particular type of writing that needs you to use a certain set of rules. These include how the reader meets the narrator (the person telling the story, which is always I in the telling of your own story) and how time works - it is mostly in the past tense. One of the most famous autobiographies is by Malala Yousafzai , I am Malala (You can download the book from the link).  Sayeeda Warsi, writing for The Daily Telegraph, giving the book four stars out of five, wrote "Malala has turned a tragedy into something positive". Entertainment Weekly gave the book a "B+", writing "Malala's bravely eager voice can seem a little thin here, in I Am Malala, likely thanks to her co-writer, but her powerful message remains undiluted." Metro lists the book as one of the "20 best non-fiction books of 2013", praising that Yousafzai's story as "one of idealism and stubborn courage"...
