In India, one of the most significant festivals is Diwali, or the Festival of Lights. It's a five-day celebration that includes good food, fireworks, colored sand, and special candles and lamps.

George's Marvellous Medicine

Image
Rik Mayall was an explosion of kinetic energy which manifested itself in a unique style of comedy that alienated those who feared life and delighted everyone else. Roald Dahl, meanwhile, was a writer of children's books who managed to conjure up worlds which were highly relatable yet, at the same time, coloured fantastically with surreal and grotesque narratives. And, in January 1986, these two worlds collided when Mayall delivered a one man performance of Roald Dahl's 1981 novel George's Marvellous Medicine for BBC1's Jackanory.

Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials

"If I can tell you something today, it is that you should never, ever believe your eyes. Or your mind for that matter." -Rat Man (page 56) "I mean, good Lord, how much can these kids take before they'll go crazy on their own?" - Female WICKED worker (page 205) "Too bad we'll never see the end of the Trials.''I know' the man answers. "But the future will thank us.'" -WICKED workers(page 206) "He imagined her having come all this way only to be killed by a vicious man-made creature. He thought of the Grievers..." -narrator (page 332) ” I really liked the concept of the scorch and how it is just miles and miles of desert wasteland. One of the reasons I liked it was because it’s all based on nature; anything dangerous that happens is usually caused by nature and so it wasn’t as though the Gladers could fight off any monsters because everything that’s happening is kind of natural. It’s interesting seeing th

Biography / Autobiography and Who You May Be

Image
Brown Girl Dreaming is a biographical work. It contains photos of the family members described in the book. There are many historical figures mentioned in the book too. A biography is a story written about a person. An autobiography is when someone writes about their own life. One of the strong points of Brown Girl Dreaming is how Jacqueline Woodson makes her own early life a symbol, or connects it to, the time she lives in, with its background of the civil rights movement in the United States. Another example of a similar autobiographical story, where the person speaking about their own life connects it to the time they live in is the Swedish Somali hip hop star Cherrie. Here she speaks about how she grew up, what is important to her and where she comes from: What do you belong to; a family, a way of living, or maybe it is about your hobbies and interests. One thing you do belong to is Generation Z. Generation Z or Gen Z , also known by a number of other names, is the demogr

We Love Bees

Image
While it is well known that bees produce honey, many other food sources also rely on bees. Conservative figures show that bees pollinate at least ONE mouthful in every THREE that we eat! Bees around the world, including in Australia, are in serious trouble. Overuse of pesticides and herbicides make bees more vulnerable to disease and pests. Modern agricultural practices and urbanisation are greatly reducing bee habitat and food sources. Scientists are seeing a large decline in bee populations worldwide. This poses a threat not only for our food production but our environment as a whole, as flowering plants rely on pollinators to survive. The good news is we can all do things to help ensure the survival of bees! Waggle dance is a term used in beekeeping and ethology for a particular figure-eight dance of the honey bee. By performing this dance, successful foragers can share information about the direction and distance to patches of flowers yielding nectar and pollen, to wa

Brown Girl Dreaming, Jacquline Woodson Writing and the Civil Rights Movement

Image
Jacquline Woodson, author of Brown Girl Dreaming speaks about the writing process Brown Girl Dreaming and The American Civil Rights Movement The Civil Rights Movement was a multi-decade movement intended to achieve equal rights and treatment for African Americans. The movement is considered to have taken place from 1954–1968, though it drew on a long history of protest against the mistreatment of African Americans. As Woodson notes multiple times in the book, even after the abolition of slavery in the United States in 1865, Jim Crow laws and general prejudice prevented African Americans from equal treatment in many arenas. Many see the end of World War II as the impetus for the Civil Rights movement. Many African Americans fought in World War II, a war predicated upon the United States's commitment to freedom. This made the blatant discrimination they faced upon returning home to the United States all the more salient. Tensions from the post-war 1940s spilled
