Some Important Inventions

An invention is a new thing, way of doing something, composition or process. It may be an improvement upon a machine or product or a new process for creating an object or a result. An invention that achieves a new function or result may be a breakthrough. Such works are special and may not be obvious to other people, even those working in the same field. An inventor may be taking a big step in success or failure.

 Some Amazing Inventions:

 Flight

The History of Human-Powered Flight is an impressive interactive timeline from NPR.

How Do Things Fly?
A great interactive site from the Smithsonian. It is THE site to learn about anything related to flight. You can design and virtually fly your own plane, and you can even design and print-out your own paper airplane.

Printing
The first printing on paper was done in China as far back as 200 CE. This used woodblocks, or blocks of wood with letters carved in reverse on them.

The big change came in printing in around 1440 when a man named Johannes Gutenberg made a winepress into a printing press.

Internet
The Internet was invented in stages, not all at once. It took 40 years to invent the Internet. And it is still being invented today.

Toilet
The Toilet is one of the most important inventions of all time. Without it disease and sickness, not to mention late night trips to the outhouse and lots of bad smells, would be more common today than they are.

What is your favourite invention?
