Biography / Autobiography and Who You May Be

Image
Brown Girl Dreaming is a biographical work. It contains photos of the family members described in the book. There are many historical figures mentioned in the book too. A biography is a story written about a person. An autobiography is when someone writes about their own life. One of the strong points of Brown Girl Dreaming is how Jacqueline Woodson makes her own early life a symbol, or connects it to, the time she lives in, with its background of the civil rights movement in the United States. Another example of a similar autobiographical story, where the person speaking about their own life connects it to the time they live in is the Swedish Somali hip hop star Cherrie. Here she speaks about how she grew up, what is important to her and where she comes from: What do you belong to; a family, a way of living, or maybe it is about your hobbies and interests. One thing you do belong to is Generation Z. Generation Z or Gen Z , also known by a number of other names, is the demogr...

We Love Bees

Image
While it is well known that bees produce honey, many other food sources also rely on bees. Conservative figures show that bees pollinate at least ONE mouthful in every THREE that we eat! Bees around the world, including in Australia, are in serious trouble. Overuse of pesticides and herbicides make bees more vulnerable to disease and pests. Modern agricultural practices and urbanisation are greatly reducing bee habitat and food sources. Scientists are seeing a large decline in bee populations worldwide. This poses a threat not only for our food production but our environment as a whole, as flowering plants rely on pollinators to survive. The good news is we can all do things to help ensure the survival of bees! Waggle dance is a term used in beekeeping and ethology for a particular figure-eight dance of the honey bee. By performing this dance, successful foragers can share information about the direction and distance to patches of flowers yielding nectar and pollen, to wa...

Brown Girl Dreaming, Jacquline Woodson Writing and the Civil Rights Movement

Image
Jacquline Woodson, author of Brown Girl Dreaming speaks about the writing process Brown Girl Dreaming and The American Civil Rights Movement The Civil Rights Movement was a multi-decade movement intended to achieve equal rights and treatment for African Americans. The movement is considered to have taken place from 1954–1968, though it drew on a long history of protest against the mistreatment of African Americans. As Woodson notes multiple times in the book, even after the abolition of slavery in the United States in 1865, Jim Crow laws and general prejudice prevented African Americans from equal treatment in many arenas. Many see the end of World War II as the impetus for the Civil Rights movement. Many African Americans fought in World War II, a war predicated upon the United States's commitment to freedom. This made the blatant discrimination they faced upon returning home to the United States all the more salient. Tensions from the post-war 1940s spilled ...

Homes and Recreation

Image
Thneedville is the town in The Lorax that Ted, his mum, Grammy Norma, Audrey and Mr- O'Hare live in. It seems to be made mostly of plastic and cement and the air is not very good. Cooper Pedy is known for two things - Opal and Underground Homes. Here most of the houses are underground including the hotel. These homes are called "dugouts" and the houses are fashioned in such a way due to scorching temperature during day time. This underground town was established in 1915 following the discovery of opal there. It's interesting to know that ninety five per cent of the world's opal comes from this area. The Seagaia Ocean Dome (シーガイアオーシャンドーム Shīgaia Ōshan Dōmu), was one of the world's largest indoor waterparks, located in Miyazaki, Miyazaki, Japan. The Polynesia-themed Ocean Dome, which was a part of the Sheraton Seagaia Resort, measured 300 metres in length and 100 metres in width, and was listed on the Guinness World Records. It opened in 1993, and ...

Writing Exercise - The City

According to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Sweden  "Most people live in cities, and thus most energy is consumed there, at the same time there is not sufficient space around cities in which to produce the energy, food and materials these cities need. People in the richer parts of the world use more land area for energy consumption than their equitable share." We can begin talking about the city from the local part of it you spend most of your time. Think about the area you live in a spend most of your time. Do you know it's history? How many people live there? How is it for public transport? Does everyone drive cars? Where does the water come from? When does the poop go? Has the area grown in population recently? Is it declining? Are there industries in the area? How many parks are there? Do any animals live there -  wild and domestic? What do you think the future of this area will be. You can use Google Maps and Wikipedia to get some idea...
